What is Percent Concentration and Sea Ice Extent?

Percent concentration is the amount of the ocean surface covered by sea ice in each pixel of the satellite image. To determine the extent of sea ice, a pixel is considered ice if it has at least 15% ice concentration.

Try out your knowledge! Move your cursor over the pictures to the left to see the image caption. Which pictures contain sea ice? About how much of the surface is covered by sea ice in each?
